The foval point of all science in the MCC centers around the study of a single enzyme, malate dehydrogen(MD). MDH is stable, inexpensive to assay and histidine tag-based purifcation in undergraduate labs is routine. Using a single protein with many isoforms and mutants as a focal point provides a common focus for a research community and facilitates incorporation of scientific collaborations between instutions that increase student learning, retention and ownership.
